A Bose-Einstein condensate analogue of Misner space: a design study of the kinematic image-sum mechanism

A design study of a BEC analogue of the Misner image-sum mechanism. The 314 micrometre image needs about 0.08 nK and the 157 micrometre antipodal correlation about 0.16 nK; B3 to B6 remain open and B1, B2, B7, B8 and B9 are fixed, so it is not a ready proposal.

Jonathan Schemoul

This paper is a design study of a Bose-Einstein condensate analogue of the kinematic image-sum mechanism in Misner space. The goal is to identify what a laboratory test would require, not to claim that a working experiment exists.

The geometry maps onto a ring of circumference set by the condensate radius. The first image appears at 2 pi R0, about 314 micrometres, and requires a temperature of about 0.08 nanokelvin. The antipodal correlation appears at pi R0, about 157 micrometres, and requires about 0.16 nanokelvin. The paper lists nine blockers, B1 to B9, including the temperature, the Beliaev-limited phonon lifetime, and the absence of a measurable fixed-q Bragg comb. B1, B2, B7, B8 and B9 are fixed; only B3 to B6 remain open.

The paper is explicit that it is a design study, not a completed experiment and not a ready proposal. A future paper should not claim feasibility until the blockers are closed.

Key results

  • Image geometry: 2 pi R0 about 314 micrometres at about 0.08 nanokelvin; antipodal correlation at pi R0 about 157 micrometres at about 0.16 nanokelvin.
  • B3 to B6 explicit and open; B1, B2, B7, B8 and B9 fixed.
  • No measurable fixed-q Bragg comb; Beliaev-limited phonon lifetime.
  • Design study, not a ready proposal.

Status and limits

This is a 25-page design study. It is not an experimental proposal and does not claim feasibility. It has not been submitted or peer reviewed.
